Why Twitter Is A Waste Of Time

By Jobo Smith

I am sure this is going against the establishment when I say that Twitter is a waste of time. I will even go so far as to say in a few years, Twitter will probably not be around unless they change the model and what they do. Why would I say this, doesn't everyone think Twitter is super awesome sauce and the next best thing to sliced bread?

The basis of my opinion is the messages that are transmitted through Twitter. It used to be amusing, having people update what they are doing etc. But the novelty has worn off. I don't care if you are going to get coffee, nor do I care that you are gonna take a nap. I really do not care to buy anything from your affiliate links that you auto-spam all day long to all followers.

The issue is not whether Twitter is great or not, its how its used. In my opinion, at least half of their accounts are bot accounts. This means that its actually not even read by a real human, its run by computers. I should know, I have several of them. I do nothing, they get me followers all day long with the I follow you, you follow me thing. One of my accounts I have not even logged into in almost 6 months and it has thousands of followers. Imagine this x millions of accounts. I am sure that most of the followers I have on these accounts are probably not real people either.

This is why most people do not care about any tweets, no one is actually seeing them. The only people that can use Twitter for any purpose might be big corporations and celebrities. Even the celebrities are now being paid to hawk crap to the avid fans - "I am going out to buy xxx yyy designer shoes, they are so cool" etc. Some get paid 5-10k per tweet.

But again see where this is leading - its all about selling crap and nothing about actual communication of ideas. The original novelty of Twitter was its a new kind of instant messaging service where you can message all followers instead of just one at a time. Now its just become an endless stream of marketing of junk with little to no value. As this continues forward, I would imagine less and less people will want to use Twitter, as its like saying "HEY OVER HERE - PLEASE SPAM ME!" and will tire of it and move on.

Of course, I am certain some who read this will strongly disagree, and that is totally fine. That is what makes America great. And if you use Twitter and are having fun, that is great also. To me, its devolving into just another spam filled universe, one that has moved away from email because of the restrictions.

I have nothing against Twitter users, this is just a commentary on what I see happening.

I am so glad to finally come across someone who agrees with me! Great intel.

I rated this with 5 stars and would agree with you on all points bar one, Twatter is excellent for following people/celebs you like, I love knowing what Stephen Fry is doing 24/7 for example, only because he can't update his website as frequently as he can on Twatter. I also agree that I was only a Twatter user for one day before being inundated with SPAMSTERS messages. don't entirely agree that Twatter will collapse as quickly as you suggest, as long as the human twats continue to tweet. LOL

I have been told many times that Twitter is a great marketing tool. To this day I have yet to use it "properly". But I agree that spam is a huge problem. It's one thing to try to market your product or products legitimately, but another to annoy people with crap. A lot of people simply do not care -- they play what they see as the "the numbers game".

But I also believe that what goes around comes around with these people sooner or later.

It's best to try to maintain some kind of integrity.

If you are looking at Twitter as a social network I would agree with you. There is probably no one reading. I also think it fails as an opt in emailing list with the direct messaging feature.

If you are looking at Twitter as a website for SEO as I am that is an entirely different matter.

If you are looking at it and using it as an article directory it can be very effective. The titles of your articles have to be to unique for this to work.

Consider this: Search on Google for

And all the Chairs Wore Tennis Balls

You will see that the first natural listing is the article itself, the second listing is the directory listing with my article placing for tennis balls and the third is my Twitter profile.

Once someone comes to this profile by any of the keywords in any on the articles they will see all the other articles and websites I have added here in my Mini Personalized Directory.

In fact I am going to tweet this article this morning after I finish this comment and then wait for Google to index it.

That is an interesting use, and yes, that would be useful. Good to you for figuring that out, great idea.

I also look at Twitter as a search engine. There are people who search for profiles that address a particular interest. The more keywords on your profile and your profile is dynamic content instead of static content the more likely your profile will come up as a match on a Twitter search.

Oh and BTW there are over 35 million matches on Goo......gle for Why Twitter Is A Waste Of Time and this article is currently #8. Congrats on picking a great title for your Intel.

To me, Twitter is best for spamming. All that have claimed to be following me (or I claim to be following) inundate me with spam ads. Some of them are adult ads! I had thought I had got a nice site whereby "follow" beings would interact closely and make comments on one another's tweets. None of the 42 tweets I have contributed so far has received any comments from my so-called followers. Now, I don't have any urge to sign in to my account again. I agree that Twitter is heading for the rocks if it continues that way.

Well said and I definitely agree to some extent. I still think Twitter has a place but I think you are right they need to change or they will fade away.
