The Best Way To Get Ranked For Keywords
By Jobo Smith
I talk to a lot of people each week about link building and SEO stuff in general. I am no expert by any means, nor do I claim to be. But I do have several websites with what would be considered "hard" keywords on page 1 of Google, and more that have many terms in the top 30. I notice most people looking for the "exact" thing to do in order to rank. They look for the perfect tool, perfect method they can use or copy. The truth is there is no such thing. The real key to getting ranked is time and diversification. Thats it. You cannot expect to start a website today, and 5 days from now you are in the top 10 of Google (well top 10 and actually stay there ...). You have to research the competition for the keyword - how long has the site been around, how many links do they have, how are they ranked on the various search engines, how is the SEO of the page etc. I like to use what most consider the best SEO tool for this - Market Samurai. It saves a lot of time, but you can get the information other ways that are free as well. Just use ol' Google to help you out in finding various free tools. All this information gives you a heads up on how hard the competition is. If they are ranked in the top 10, you will have to beat one of them out to get your place. And you have to remember, most of them are working to keep their place or move up. So what do you do? Easy. Make a plan, stick to the plan. You should be doing article submission with your main keyword and slight variations of the keyword (for example, plurals) every day. It does help to get an article drip system to help you schedule article postings. This is software where you can load some articles in and it will then publish them for you over time. You should be using social bookmarking, such as delicious and others. There are easily over 100 of these types of sites where you can bookmark your pages. You should make several blogs devoted to your keyword, complete with content. You should have several Squidoo pages, Hub Pages, Ning also all with articles and information about your keyword, all linking to your site. You should use stuff like Yahoo answers, finding questions related to your keyword. You should be commenting on forums with your site in your signature. You should be making video submissions of some kind or another, again, with links to your site. There are more ways of course, but its not necessary to list all of them here - this is a pretty good list. Which of these do you use? All of them. Diversification is the key. Concentrating on just 1 method will not work. It is not natural looking and while it might work eventually, it is way harder to maintain (meaning someone can knock you off easier). After all, if you are gonna go to all the work to get ranked in the top 10, you do not want to lose it. Also make sure that you alternate the URL to links inside your site, do not just use the top page only. You will get ranked faster if you put about 60-70% of the links to inner pages rather than the top page. The other key is do it over time. Most sites in the top 10 you will see are at least 6 months old, most are well over a year or more old. They have probably been working over time to build the site up. So you will need to do the same. |

I'm doing some of this stuff Jobo, and will do more. But I gotta tell ya -- this stuff gives me a headache. I wish that I could afford to let someone ELSE to do my promotion stuff for me, then I could concentrate on just producing good product line

yea, it is a pain, but it has to be done. Where it gets very hard is multiple sites with multiple keywords. I fell into the trap of taking on far far too much at once. After all, if once site is good, why not 15. 15 is good, but it became a mess when I could not track what I did where because there was just too much going on. I have learned from that to just take on 1 maybe 2 sites at a time, get them about 80% of where they need to be, then add 1 more etc. Some of the stuff you can outsource relatively cheaply, but again, cheap adds up when its cheap price * 100 for multiple sites and multiple keywords.
I agree with everything you said. I'm still trying to figure out how Qondio helps. I have written some intels but I'm not sure I'm doing them right. I wish someone would do a Intel on Qondio. As you said about the number of websites being hard to track I had 4 but I just could not find the time to keep them up to date so now I only have 2. My Dog site http://www.dog-first-aid-101.com is listed #1 in google for the keyword Dog First Aid and my site http://www.protect-your-eyesight.com for the keyword protect your eyesight. I'm working on trying to make it #1 for the keyword eyesight but that is going to be hard. Thanks for your tips and I look forward to reading more.
I have heard that the best link back to your web site is a text link. If the anchor text is one of the keywords you are trying to improve your rank for, all the better.
Nice Intel, Some people actually believe that they can rank over night and that it is easy. Google needs to learn to trust your site and this is done with what you have been talking about.
Thank you for sharing this valuable information, Jobo. I've made a copy and hope to be able to implement as many of your suggestions as possible. We only have one site, but it has a lot of items for sale. We need more content and I'm trying to associate my writings to our website. It's a struggle!!! Best wishes. Frederick
