How A Linkwheel Works to Boost Your Site Ranking

By Jobo Smith

Most people on the web want higher traffic and better search engine rankings. Additionally, its common knowledge that you have to build links. This is where the use of a linkwheel can come in handy. What is a linkwheel? Actually, its quite simple. Its a series of pages or articles that are all linked together in some fashion, with the ultimate link pointing to your website. Now I did not create this concept, I learned about it from others and am sharing the knowledge with you. They can be very powerful to boost your site rankings.

The key is all the articles or pages need to be on sub related topics to your site. For example, lets say your site is on dog grooming in Los Angeles. You might create an article on dog food, dog grooming supplies, dog medicine, dog parks, and perhaps dog boarding. Its your choice to make a blog about them, or just write articles. Blogger.com, Ning, Hubpages, Squidoo are all great for whipping up a simple, focused site on a niche topic. I like to do both, meaning create some web properties AND write articles. Depending on the topic of my website, I will try to create 2 articles per related topic and then make 1 web property and publish 1 article.

Once you have your articles done, you need to choose a place to publish it that does not moderate or hold the article back. Make sure you have this article or web property pointing to your main site with a good keyword. You need to get the URL of the published article and copy it. I usually keep either an excel sheet or just open notepad when I am doing this. Now that you have 1 article published, go publish another one, but this time make sure you put the URL from the first article into this second one. You can put it in the resource box or use a keyword to anchor it. Get the URL of this second article, and mark it down. Keep repeating it until you have no more articles and they are all linked together. Some people like to take the last article and point it to both the prior article and the first link wheel article, creating a completed wheel. To me, its not really necessary and kind of looks artificial too much so I leave mine open.

Now when you are creating your link wheel there are a few variations you can use. You can have each article pointing to your main site AND to another related article, or you can make some of them do that. An additional step you can do is to take the first article that is pointing to your main site, and have each spoke article point to that and to another spoke. Pretty much you can see then combinations. The main thing is you want to pass along the links and make the end link more powerful by having related material linked as well all together. I try to mix it up a bit when I am doing them on a site so it does not look too artificial.

Good article. I think the wheel in your picture would make for a very bumpy ride.

I find it interesting that you have an Intel about linking and yet do not include a follow link or non follow links (external links) to your Intel. Did I miss something here?

I did not have my site verified yet, I had the typical problems with the URL not being "exact" and additionally getting Qondio to see the verification on the right page.

Thanks Jobo

Spider networking is a similar analogy to this principle.
Placing key information between sites that all direct the reader to one site, YOURS!
Akin to the act of putting ones fingers in many pies!

I like the idea of working out the links on a spread sheet. It can be difficult to work it all out as a concept without 'seeing' the picture. Nice article, thanks.

Wow, your article awoke me to dreams. A Linkwheel expanded my horizons so to speak. Thank you for the sharing of so comprehensive description. I think that's worthy a try.

No problem. I had just never seen an Intel without a featured website. I was paying attention. I registered for your Article Directory. That is some password. (grin)

I also added a tweet about your Intel on my twitter profile.
